Breath to Breath

Autor Craig Lew
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 17 noi 2015 – vârsta de la 15 ani
William is seventeen when he’s uprooted from his home and sent to live with his estranged father—someone he hasn’t seen since he was a little kid. When he’s unexpectedly dragged into a situation where he has no choice but to help an abused four-year-old boy, William’s world is rocked to the core as he discovers the truth of the boy’s experience of extreme sexual abuse. He and this boy are connected in ways William can’t even imagine. As horrible memories begin to flood his consciousness, William’s rage drives him to steal a neighbor’s guns, convinced he must stop those responsible for causing a boy so much pain and betrayal.

How William finds the love and compassion he needs to make the right choices is the heart and pulse of this riveting verse novel. Inspired by a true story, Breath To Breath explores what hurt and healing really mean: to survive you hold your breath, but to live you must exhale.

2015 HONORABLE Mention for Young Adult Fiction —INDIEFAB Award, Foreword Reviews

"Seductive. Enthralling. Earth-shattering. Carve out some time because you won’t want to put this one down." —Ellen Hopkins, bestselling author of the CRANK TRILOGY

"Written in short, impactful poetic prose, this is a gut-wrenching novel that manages to be dark and hopeful. It is a suspenseful mystery with a revelation that is unexpectedly sad and heartbreaking. VERDICT A tough choice for sensitive readers, this is recommended for older, mature teens." —Tamela Chambers (Chicago Public Schools), School Library Journal

“From the haunting, disturbing opening, all the way to the riveting climax, Lew delivers a tale of a boy on the brink of both discovery and destruction, whose poetic voice shines forth from inner darkness." —Foreword Reviews

"Craig Lew did a brilliant job on writing about a horrible reality.” —Nadia Caballero, San Francisco Book Review

“Intense, visceral, raw, and healing, this novel, simply put, is about a survivor, but, also, about the choices one makes to move past survival into fully embracing life, with all its ugliness and beauty, which oftentimes live side by side.” —Cleaver Magazine

“Lew creates a story that reads like prose, but makes the reader feel the poetry inside. He grabs the reader with insightful line breaks, word choice, and style that are easy to appreciate without consciously thinking about them while reading. I loved how Lew was also able to use the different poem breaks to create strong pacing. You won’t want to put it down once you start.” —A.R. Braithwaite, Folded Pages Distillery

"(Breath to Breath) was hard to put down. A truly gripping and troubling story in a good way...." —Dr. Stan Steiner, "The Bookman"

"The climax of the novel achieves that perfect balance of believability and unpredictability. Whether or not those events actually happened to William, this is a gripping story that the reader will not forget easily." —The Pirate Tree, Social Justice and Children's Literature

"It's hard to read descriptions of a childhood crushed between lust and greed, but author Craig Lew doesn't leave readers in that dark alley; he gives us a flashlight so that we watch William, powered by love and compassion, begin to make his way out of the darkness." —Terri Farley, author of Seven Tears Into the Sea and "The Phantom Stallion" series.

"Breath to Breath is dark, powerful, and full of hope. I can't stop thinking about it." —Carol Lynch Williams, award-winning author of The Haven and The Chosen One.

"This is a powerful story of brutality repressed and denied, of mystery and tragedy turned into redemption. Craig Lew’s writing is brilliant, easy to read, and very literary.?" —Gloria Skurzynski, award-winning author of Virtual War, The Clones, and The Revolt.

Prologue

Live or die?
That’s the question I ask
with every breath.
Continue to live,
or stop altogether?

Breathe

A breath only allows you to exist.
You must engage.
Venture forth.
Tangle yourself with others to have a life.
But life needs a purpose or what’s the point?

Breathe

The point . . .
The point stares back at me.
Silver with gray lines where the machining sharpened it.
Nine inches of hardened steel.
A comfortable wood handle.
Only $4.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Breathe

Beyond . . .

Beyond the optic nerve.
Cornea, iris, viscous body, retina.
If I get the ice pick beyond my eye,
I could reach the frontal lobe.
Where the memories live.
But I’ll have to dig around
once the ice pick gets into my brain.
Swirl, dig, search, find
hideous memories hiding in their temple.

Breathe

Temple . . .

My temple.
The pterion bone is the thinnest spot
in our skulls, just behind our eyes
and in front of our ears.
I could go in sideways,
shove the ice pick straight in, then up.
Swirl, dig, search, erase.
But I might puncture the middle meningeal artery.
Does that matter? Not today.

Breathe

Today . . .

Today. Right now.
This very instant.
Who am I?

At any moment in time, we are the sum
of our experiences.
The average of our highs and lows
in the life we have played out.
The characters we have portrayed.
The truths we have embellished.
The lies we have told.
The facts we have omitted.
The life I once knew is all lies.
