Brill's Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism
Michael Wilkinson Connie Au, Jörg Haustein, Todd M. Johnsonen Limba Engleză Hardback – 30 sep 2021
How many Pentecostals are there in the world? How did Pentecostalism grow so fast? What do Pentecostals believe? What role did revivals play like the Azusa Street Revival in the USA or the Mukti Mission Revival in India? What do Pentecostals experience when they speak in tongues, pray for healing, and seek prosperity?
Brill's Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism answers such questions, drawing upon disciplines such as anthropology, biblical studies, economics, gender studies, history, theology, and other areas of related interest.
The online version of the Encyclopedia is already available. See here.

Notă biografică
Michael Wilkinson is professor of sociology and coordinator of the Canadian Pentecostal Research Network at Trinity Western University. He is the author of numerous articles and books on Pentecostalism including After the Revival, Catch the Fire, Pentecostals and the Body, and Global Pentecostal Movements.
Connie Au (PhD, University of Birmingham, UK) is a theologian who publishes on Pentecostalism and ecumenism. She does research on Asian Pentecostalism particularly in Chinese context. She also studies ecumenical history and organises ecumenical courses on liturgies for lay people. She translates English theological books relating to church history, liturgy and spirituality into Chinese.
Jörg Haustein (Dr. theol., University of Heidelberg) teaches World Christianity at the University of Cambridge. He is one of the co-founders and co-ordinators of the European Research Network on Global Pentecostalism (GloPent.net) and serves as editor of its peer-reviewed journal PentecoStudies. Dr Haustein’s primary research area in the field of Pentecostal Studies is Ethiopia, but he publishes and teaches more widely on Pentecostalism in Africa and worldwide. His work sits at the intersection between anthropology, historiography, and theology, with a special interest in tracing the interplay of global discourses and local diffractions in the study of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements.
Todd M. Johnson (PhD, William Carey International University) is the Eva B. and Paul E. Toms Distinguished Professor of Mission and Global Christianity and co-director of the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Johnson is Visiting Research Fellow at Boston University’s Institute for Culture, Religion and World Affairs leading a research project on international religious demography. He is co-author of the World Christian Encyclopedia (2nd and 3rd editions), co-editor of the Atlas of Global Christianity, and series editor (with Ken Ross) of the 10-volume Edinburgh Companions to Global Christianity series. He is co-editor of the World Christian Database and the World Religion Database (Brill).

“Brill’s Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism Online is an essential resource for anyone wishing to get an overview of a key topic, important person, movement or region. The various sections on global Pentecostalism and its theology provide important entry points and useful insights for students and scholars alike. It is highly recommended.”
Mark J. Cartledge, London School of Theology
“The Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism Online is an important addition to the burgeoning literature on global pentecostalism. Wilkinson has gathered an exceptional group of scholars to write insightful entries on this fascinating religious movement that has quickly expanded across the planet.”
Cristina Rocha, Western Sydney University
“Dictionaries and Encyclopedias are always labors of love: they require knowledge, wisdom, and patience. Brill's Encyclopedia to Global Pentecostalism is yet one more example of these characteristics. The editors have done a remarkable job of selecting topics, assigning authors, bringing their expertise to bear upon older topics, and demonstrating developments in new areas of research. Topics the editorial team chose to address include historical, theological, sociological, ecumenical, psychological entries, and much more, with reference to newer studies alongside those that are well known. This project is much more than a patient labor of love, it is a resource that should open up the world of the various types and manifestations of Pentecostalism as they have emerged throughout the world over the past century, often crossing denominational borders as though they did not exist. Students of Pentecostalism, pastors, and libraries will all benefit from having access to this fine volume.”
Cecil M. Robeck, Jr., Fuller Theological Seminary
"For some years, encyclopaedias on Pentecostalism have been produced but mostly failed to display the truly international and diverse nature of this movement. The editors have done admirably well in making this the most comprehensive encyclopaedia on the subject to date, and one that will serve as a reference point and benchmark for years to come."
Allan Anderson, University of Birmingham (emeritus)
"Wow! The editors of BEGP have done an amazing thing by putting together this impressive state-of-the-art collection on global Pentecostalism. BEGP challenges some widely accepted myths about origins and growth by bringing together the work of almost 200 contributing authors. The themes, biographies (of people, movements, and organizations), wide geographic scope, and statistics from around the world make this an indispensable reference work. Easy to use, the BEGP is wide in scope, well-documented, and carefully cross-referenced. BEGP is a tool that belongs in the hands of every reader with an interest in Pentecostalism and all its global expressions. We are all indebted to these colleagues for their vision in bringing together such a wide range of scholarship. Their work helps us to see the connections and the diversity of global Pentecostalism with new eyes."
Linda M. Ambrose, Professor of History, Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
"This Encyclopedia is a fine resource for those embarking on the study of global Pentecostalism. Its vast collection of valuable essays by recognized experts and new researchers from across the globe offers a rich variety of perspectives on what is today one of the world’s most rapidly expanding religious movements. The coverage of significant individuals, institutions, events and themes, as well as countries, makes this work of reference an essential starting place for understanding the origins, variety and diffusion of global Pentecostalism."
David Maxwell, Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History, University of Cambridge
