Publishingas aImages of Americaa series, is a photographic narrative detailing the societal and historical importance these spots served in Bucks County history.
Set in the 1700s through the 1950s, the book is more than just pictures as Clark provides a glimpse into the significance of inns and taverns as well as the ongoing social conflicts that influenced not only Bucks County but the nation.
Arranging the old photographs she collected allowed her to follow a historical storyline that leads readers through the Revolutionary and Civil wars, the Underground Railroad, and the Temperance Movement and Prohibition.
aWhen someone is done reading this book from beginning to end, and hopefully not just looking at the photographs, theyall have a good sense of Bucks County history, a says Clark.
aTheyall learn a little bit about the covered bridges and the Delaware Canal. Theyall learn something about womenas history. Itas not just a book about a photograph or a building. Thereas a little bit of everything in there that in some way has touched inn or tavern life.a
Clark is no stranger to Bucks County nor is it her first foray delving into regional history. The longtime Doylestown area resident remembers spending her childhood exploring deserted places and gathering thediscarded objects.
aIave always loved exploring. When I was a teenager, we used to spend some time up in the Poconos area, a the Philadelphia native explains. aThere were a few places that had been abandoned a old resorts and old music camps and casinos a and as kids, we would explore them.a
aI was always intrigued by those things, a she continues, aand I think it set me on a path to see what I can find.a
Despite her inner explorer, Clarkas professional venture into the past is fairly recent. She spent most of her career working in a high pressure position as a senior executive when she realized it was time to follow her real passion a the past. She quit her job and started her own company, Historia Productions.
aAfter 30 years in the corporate world, I was ready to do something else, a she recalls.
aI had been thinking about writing and researching regional history.a
The idea for her book came about while she was researching her photographic journal aBucks County, a also published by Arcadia, in 2006.
Cataloging photographs, personal stories and other historical detail for aBucks County, a Clark found a lot of material about old inns and taverns that proved too substantial for one chapter so she put the information aside with the intent of using it for another project.
Eventually, Clark returned to the project, and seven months of full-time researching and organizing yielded a 127-page book featuring 220 photographs about Bucks County inn and tavern life.
Clark tried to assemble as many pictures with people in them.
aThey bring the book to life, a she explains. aThereas so much of the social context that getscaptured in these pictures.a
In fact, one of her favorite photographs features a slew of people. It also doubles as the book cover. Capturing athe essence of the tavern, a says Clark, the photograph shows patrons, neighborhood children and a flying flag in the background as well as a man holding two flags. Clark surmised the people in the picture have come together for a holiday.
aThese taverns were community gathering places, a she explained.
aThis was a place where friends met and celebrations took place and people were fed and enjoyed socializing with each other.
aOverall, these were places people came together to enjoy themselves, a she continues.
aMany of them still in existence are restaurants and a lot of them are landmarks.a
Of the 120 places featured, Clark revealed that about 80 percent are still standing, 60 percent of those are still serving the public in some sense.
aOne of the things that drove me to do this book, a Clark says, awas I felt we had a lot of wonderful history and most people really didnat know it and it gets lost over time.a
With a little less than 200 years to wade through, Clark created a network of people and sources that helped her.
aThere are about 200 people out there in one way or another, whether they realize it or not, who helped me, a she says.
In particular, she names Charles W. Lauble Jr., Gladys Koder and Edwin Harrington as three very influential sources. aThey were the most generous with their personal archives and helping me sort through and provide material.a
Her networking and hard work paid off when the book was released at the end of October. Clark hopes the bookwill serve as a reminder of the abundant history Bucks County offers.
aIf thereas only one thing that comes out of these books for me, itas that there are more people who cared about preserving some of these wonderful places. Then I will be a happy person.a
