In Virgil’s Bucollica, a collection of ten poems in hexameter, shepherds sing about singing and love, and in the process, also take note of the Roman civil wars. The Georgica, also in hexameter, is structured as a systematic textbook for farmers, but between the lines, the poems can be read as a “mirror for the sovereign,” directed at Augustus.
