Build Your Wings on the Way Down

Autor Judith Staponkus
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 12 iul 2021
Being passed over for a promotion is a blow to Chicago account executive Maureen Henderson, but finding her husband, David, in bed with her younger sister, Jasmine, sends Maureen over the edge. On that day, Maureen points her car away from everything she knows and starts driving. She picks up an emaciated stray dog and a hitchhiker named Jeffrey Bennet, and they drive northward into Wisconsin. Maureen is broke and working at a truck stop when she encounters her Aunt Toni, a drunken tavern owner who holds the deed to the farm owned by Maureen's imprisoned mother, Peggy. Maureen takes a job at the organic farm where Jeffrey works for his friends, Dill and Summer. Strange things begin happening that replicate Maureen's recurring images from her past. Toni is illegally selling her sister's farmland to Sandover, a frack sand mining company, and Maureen learns Dill is doing likewise, needing the money to pay Summer's mounting cancer bills. Maureen's sister, Jasmine, locates Maureen, and despite Mauren's protests, visits their mother in prison. Andrea, Maureen's secretary, informs her their company suspects Maureen of sabotaging them by leaking confidential information, and Maureen secretly goes home to plant damaging data where David will find it. The unexplained incidences continue to plague Maureen, and in the attic, she discovers old newspapers with revealing stories of Peggy's trial for Stan's murder. When Toni refuses to relinquish the deed, Jeff advises Maureen to obtain a quitclaim from her mother, and Maureen visits Peggy in prison for the first time in twenty years. There, she finds Jasmine and David, who have already obtained a quitclaim from Peggy, naming Jasmine as the owner of the farm. David is arrested for defrauding Maureen's company. Sandover begins expansion of the mine, and Maureen and her friends stop them. Jeff goes to court to obtain a Temporary Retraining Order, with the plan to file a civil suit against Toni and Sandover. Maureen relives an attack by Stan, her mother's boyfriend, and haunting memories come flooding back. Summer dies, and Maureen learns Dill is Stan's son and knew of Stan's abuse. Dill admits to tormenting Maureen to drive her away. Dill decides to sell the farm. Maureen, Toni, and Jasmine visit Peggy in prison and learn the truth about what happened on the day Stanley was killed. Jasmine decides to sell her mother's farm to Sandover. When the Sandover deal falls through, Maureen buys their family farm back from her sister. Peggy dies, and her will names Maureen, and not Dill, as owner of Stan's farm, which Peggy had inherited from Stan. Dill reveals how he unknowingly stopped Stan from continuing his abuse of Maureen, which explains why he was cut out of his father's will. Maureen allows Dill to remain on the farm once owned by Stan, a place Maureen could never accept.
