Burke's Garden: Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)

Autor Louise B Leslie, Terry W. Mullins
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 aug 2007
Founder James Burke thought he had found a new Garden of Eden when he first saw Burke's Garden, the unique basin completely surrounded by mountains in Tazewell County. Called God's Thumbprint by modern poets, the fertile land was carved from the southern Appalachians after centuries of natural erosion. Today its scenic beauty is appreciated and protected by the residents who have settled on the rich farmlands. These early photographs of Burke's Garden, including the first homes and settlers, tell a story of the importance of land and family traditions.

Notă biografică

Louise B. Leslie is the retired editor of the Clinch Valley News, a weekly newspaper dating back to 1845. Her maternal ancestors settled in Burke's Garden more than two centuries ago, and she has spent her life in Tazewell County, where she writes and edits for local publications. Dr. Terry W. Mullins, a Tazewell native, has paternal ties to the community, his grandfather having settled in Burke's Garden more than a century ago. Mullins is finishing his 30th year as a teacher of government and history at Tazewell High School and is a member of the adjunct faculty at Southwest Virginia Community College and Bluefield State College. Mullins and Leslie have coauthored two other Arcadia Publishing titles: Tazewell County and Tazewell.
