Over 650 species of butterfly are known to occur in South Africa. In the Cape Peninsula, 67 species and subspecies occur, as well as three occasional migrants from the eastern regions. Considering that the Cape Peninsula covers less than 420 square kilometres, this area is relatively rich in butterfly fauna.
