Still grieving after wife Dina's sudden death, private investigator Ethan Cruickshank-still headquartered in beautiful Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, agrees somewhat reluctantly to let his old acquaintance and sometime nemesis Jeff LaForge engage his services. Cruickshank's job is to look into a series of what appear to be threats against LaForge, a newspaper publisher turned online retail mogul. The case reunites Ethan with a group of people-LaForge's associates-that he and Dina used to socialize with in the states before the tragic incident that almost ended Cruickshank's career. Among these acquaintances is LaForge's spectacularly seductive wife, Abby, an old flame. Like a lot of people, Cruickshank wouldn't mind so much if somebody took a shot at the egotistical LaForge, but he'd hate to see anything happen to her. The danger suddenly becomes more than threat when photographer Jimmy Hopper, Abby's friend and her husband's employee, is found shot to death. Why would anybody want to kill the boyish Hopper? As in his previous Cabo thrillers, novelist Robert Wisehart puts the reader in the middle of a maze of circumstance and misdirection, guided by a protagonist that-although he's deeply flawed and sometimes a bit heavy-handed-manages to hang onto his sense of humor even more firmly than he does his sanity.
