Cambodian Treachery

Autor Guy Singer
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Logan is 13. It is Good Friday when the postman delivers a much delayed letter from Cambodia. His pal, Seyha has been bough by an orphanage in Siem Reap and is fearful of what will become of him. Join Logan and his friends as they travel to Cambodia to find out first hand about the tricks and deceits dealt out my Cambodians. It starts the minute they arrive; from the airport to the crooked taxi driver - from the rice scam on the lake to the milk scam near Pub Street. Finally they encounter the real reason for going there; the orphanages where children are bought and sold as a commodity. They are starved to make the tourists pity them and donate money for food. They are made to perform shows to bring the tourists in. Some are even sold as prostitutes to fill the pockets of greedy directors. However, there are reasons why these men's minds are like this and the book tells of the dark history of Cambodia and ponders the question why do such atrocities still happen? Join the boys as they make visits to hospitals where they are left to ponder the conditions that exist. They visit the landfill site, where a whole community eaks out a living from waste. A living that lacks sanitation, healthcare and any form of welfare. The book is not wholly a dark tale. There are many lighter moments. An orphaned puppy, Ch'gae, becomes the boys' new pet. The ever-present joke of 'What do you call a dog in Cambodian? Lunch ' adds sinister overtone. Will Logan find Seyha in time? Will the good orphanages, offering humanitarian care to the street children prevail? Will the Khmer New Year party be a success? Read Cambodian Treachery to find out. Singer's writing is clear and precise. The narrative shows an understanding of the country and the culture, which comes from years of living in the area, and help from trustworthy friends. His ability to keep one on the 'edge of your seat', makes this a book, which once started can not be put down.
