In 1938, André Malraux and Max Aub meet in Barcelona and decide to shoot the film Sierra de Teruel - L'Espoir, an homage to the Republican side of the Spanish civil war to internationalize the conflict. This novel narrates the filming, the fall of Barcelona, the exile of many Spaniards, and the protagonists behind its premiere in Paris right when the Nazis take the city.
