Notă biografică
STEPHEN J. ROCKEL completed his Ph.D. in the Department of History, University of Toronto, in 1997. From 1997 to 1999 he taught economic history at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal), Durban, before returning to Toronto where he is Associate Professor of history. His research interests include 19th-century East Africa, African labor history, urban history, and violence, as well as the culture and ideology of imperialism. His current projects include histories of commercial change in 19th-century Tanzania, Tanzanian national integration and identity, and the civilian experience in imperial wars.
