Carrington Elsewhere

The beating-just one of many-was particularly vicious. Carrington's face was a bloodied and bruised mess after her mother's latest drunken outburst. Carrington had finally had enough. The resourceful fourteen-year-old knew she had to escape the dismal bungalow she shared with her half-sister and mother. Her mother was always out drinking with various boyfriends anyway, and her temperamental sister practically lived with friends. Who would miss her?

When Carrington discovers the father she never knew has died, she sets out to find her grandmother, A. C. Browne, who was listed in her father's obituary. Time is scarce. Carrington's mother is also seeking Mrs. Browne. She'll be furious when she learns that Carrington has taken charge and reached out to A. C. Browne first.

When Carrington and her grandmother meet, they quickly develop a warm and deep connection. Perhaps both of their lives can begin anew. But the new relationship brings jealousy and hardships. Not everyone in Carrington's newfound family is pleased to learn she exists, especially her class-conscious Aunt Regina.
