Cate, Part One

Cate Burton and Jack Marin have always loved each other, even before they knew what love was. The two were born only two days apart and grew up together in the suburbs of Detroit. They spent their entire childhood and adolescence together, secretly in love with one another. On the night of Homecoming in their senior year, Jack spirits Cate away from the dance and proposes marriage. Of course she accepts and they marry in the Catholic church they were raised in. They honeymoon by taking a six week backpacking trip across Europe and return home to begin their studies at the University of Michigan.

Jack grows up as an accomplished swimmer and frequent rescuer of Cate and Cate is the exceptional student who is always willing to help her clumsy friend with his studies, because he is just one notch below her smarts. They both start working at odd jobs barely in their teens and start saving, for what they don't know.
