One hundred years ago, the guns of August roared. The four years of conflict that followed were so terrible that many called it "The War to End all Wars." But the Great War was just the starting point for a century dominated by war at the cost of over 187,000,000 human lives. The losses suffered by all sides during that conflict, and its blatant stagnation and uselessness, should have taught us, but they didn't. Among the losses were some of the brightest young talents of a generation, including brilliant poets Alan Seeger, Tom Kettle, Wilfred Owen, and Charles Hamilton Sorley. Charles Sorley's Ghost commemorates those losses and examines the impact of war from the poet's perspective. More than a Dead Poets Soliloquy, however, this volume also takes note of other significant anniversaries that will be marked in the Memorial Year 2014, as well as celebrations of life. The introduction and appendices provide both an historical framework and food for thought. Still, much of this volume is a thanatopsis - a contemplation of Death, our one true God.
