This attractive little volume takes us on a visual journey through the greatest splendors of China’s varied geography and the chief monuments of its 5,000-year-old civilization. Its 243 color photographs, which include 12 panoramic gatefolds, show us the country’s most famous landmarks—like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall—as we have never seen them before, and and introduce us to less familiar but just as fascinating sights, like the the multicolored travertine lakes of Huanglong Valley and the beautiful calligraphic inscriptions on the rugged rocks of Mount Taishan. Extended captions at the back of the book provide a concise introduction to the history and significance of each of the forty-four locales depicted, twenty-eight of which have been designated as World Heritage sites by UNESCO.

What is China really like? It all depends on how you look at it. On the one hand, China is very ancient; its great river of civilization has been flowing freely for several thousand years. On the other hand, China is very young; its cities, towns, and villages brim with youthful energy amidst all the pressures of life. China looks majestic; its sublime natural landscapes are filled with tll mountains, wide rivers, and deep valleys. And China also looks lovely; its elegant gardens and picturesque rural views speak volumes about the Chinese people's desire for an idyllic life. This country, so vast and so full of contradictions, bears witness to the all-encompassing quality of Chinese culture and its ideal of "Universal Harmony."
The ancestors of the Chinese people left behind a wealth of gifts. The grand and glorious Yungang Grottoes show how Buddhist art, which was executed in the Indian and Persian styles when it was first introduced to China, was gradually accepted and assimilated into Chinese culture. The Forbidden City derives its unique splendor less from its individual buildings than from the grandeur and harmony of its entire architectural ensemble, which is meticulously laid out in accordance with functional and symbolic principles. The Temple, Cemetery, and Family Residence of Confucius, which make up a huge architectural complex as impressive as the Forbidden City, echo the spirit of hierarchy and balance inherent in the Confucian "Doctrine of the Mean."
