Gerry just stopped to be a good Samaritan and help someone with a broken shopping bag. The people from his train were trampling the poor woman. You know how crowds are; she was in danger of losing her groceries. He didn't even notice how beautiful she was until afterwards, and when she invited him for a drink it seemed churlish to turn her down. I mean, why would he?
