Established in London in 2002, the Aga Khan University, Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations aims to strengthen research and teaching about the heritages of Muslim societies as they have evolved over time, and to examine the challenges these societies face in today's globalised world. It also seeks to create opportunities for interaction among academics, traditionally trained scholars and other professionals in an effort to deepen the understanding by Muslims and non-Muslims alike of issues affecting Muslim societies today. Muslim Civilisations Abstracts Series Editor: Aptin Khanbaghi This series presents an innovative reference catalogue of annotated bibliographies and abstracts of encyclopedias published during the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. By translating these in up to eight languages, the MCA series aims not only to represent the diversity of Muslim societies, but also to make accessible to scholars, students and the public at large the plethora of existing scholarship about Muslim civilisations. Cities as Built and Lived Environments Edited by Aptin Khanbaghi The rich diversity of the Muslim world is strikingly expressed through its myriad of cities. This reference volume presents abstracts of scholarship examining socio-cultural and cosmopolitan processes with aspects of material culture in contemporary and historic urban contexts. The abstracts, in English, Arabic and Turkish, examine cities as built (architecture and urban infrastructure) and lived (urban social life and culture) environments. The important subject of urban growth in Muslim majority countries over the past fifty years is dealt with in the abstracts of recent works which discuss issues of infrastructure and the environment, as well as migration from rural areas to cities. The topics related to cities and urban life which are discussed in these abstracts demonstrate that concerns vary among Muslim majority countries, and from one decade to another.
