Civil Society in the Middle East, Volume 1: Social, Economic and Political Studies of the Middle East and Asia, cartea 50/1

Editat de Norton
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 dec 1993
Launched in 1992, the Civil Society in the Middle East program has brought together dozens of leading scholars to analyze political life through an exploration of civil society within the states of the region.
This is the first of two volumes to be published by Brill; it contains original studies of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Tunisia, the West Bank and Gaza, as well as the prospects for democratization in the Arab world, the consequences of economic liberalization and contemporary Islamic thought on civil society and democracy.
This first volume offers a wealth of new material on unions, political parties and professional syndicates, and other components of civil society, as the authors weigh the prospects for political reform in the Middle East, and provide readable yet richly informed assessments of state-society relations.

Recenzii

'The essays are first rate, and are an important addition to the debate about democracy in the Middle East.'
W. W. F., Current History, 1995.
'...it is a genuine pleasure to encounter an edited work, such as this, which is provocative, enlightening, candid, and engaging from start to finish. From the editor's introduction to the concluding chapter, the quality is refreshingly, even startlingly, high. One can only hope that the second volume maintains the quality of the first.'
Ronald D. McLaurin, Middle East Insight.
'...this volume of excellent essays - some previously published - is well worth reading.'
William B. Qeandt, Foreign Affairs, 1995.
'What is most striking about this volume as a whole is its overall excellence. Although several chapters stand out as exceptional - Bellin and Brand, for example - this edited work hold together throughout the text. Its thesis is clear and analyzed by every author, and each of these distinguished scholars is able to put her/his expertise to best use. This book is a must read for any graduate seminar in Middle East politics and/or sociology. It also should work well in a graduate seminar in Comparative Politics and/or Democratic Theory.'
Denis J. Sullivan, International Journal of Middle East Studies, 1997.
