Cyrus Ingerson (C. I.) Scofield (1843 1921) is best remembered for his reference Bible, the first annotated work of its kind, published in 1909. As a young Confederate soldier, Scofield was decorated for valor at Antietam, and after the war served as a lawyer, state legislator, and US attorney for Kansas. Led to Christ by a YMCA evangelist in 1879, Scofield turned his attention to the study and teaching of scripture. In addition to writing, he served as a minister in Texas and Massachusetts, and founded the Central American Mission in 1890.
