Captain Brooks, head of the LAPD detective division, informs one of his subordinates that weird things are going on in Waterdale. The detective knows Los Angeles fairly well, considers it "the land of fruits and nuts" and isn't too concerned when he hears about crazy or bizarre people anywhere on his beat. When a young girl disappears, however, Detective Brennan focuses his attention on the ramshackle Victorian house that his captain mentioned.
