for SATB and organ with optional congregationPerfect for celebrating Pentecost, this joyous anthem on the theme of the Holy Spirit centres around the Veni Creator Spiritus plainchant, fragments of which have been skilfully developed to create an expressive setting of Edwin Hatch's Breathe on me, breath of God. Masterfully crafted, the anthem moves seamlessly between the familiar plainchant and Bullard's original melody, before culminating in a climactic final verse in which the two melodies are sung simultaneously, bringing the anthem to an exultant close.

Alan Bullard alternates the Mechlin plainsong 'Veni Creator' ('Come, O Creator spirit'), sung in Latin or English, verse by verse with a setting of 'Breathe on me, breath of God' that sounds as if it is an elaboration of the plainsong melody. Each verse intensifies in complexity until the fourth verses, which, instead of being separate, combine the doxology of 'Veni Creator' with 'Breathe on me, breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee â' to thrilling effect. A congregation may join with the choir in the 'Veni Creator' verses.

Notă biografică

Alan Bullard was born in London and studied with Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music, and at Nottingham University. He enjoyed a successful career in music education; for many years he was Head of Composition at Colchester Institute, and is currently an examiner for ABRSM. He now devotes most of his time to composing, editing, and arranging. His music unfailingly appeals to both performers and audiences; he has written for all kinds of choirs, and instrumental works for a variety of ensembles and orchestras. Alan is a respected writer of music for examination syllabuses and educational albums. His major publications include the four inspirational Oxford Flexible Choral Anthologies, Alan Bullard Anthems, and the five cantatas Wondrous Cross, O Come Emmanuel, A Light in the Stable, Psalmi Penitentiales, and Images of Peace. He and his wife Janet also write the Pianoworks series for the older beginner.
