Comfort in the Arms of the Damned
Autor Vick, Jonathan M.en Limba Engleză Paperback
One act. 90 minutes.
When Tobias was a child, he had a monster in the closet named Xavier; a monster who quickly became his friend when his Mother and Father divorced. However, Tobias outgrew the Monster, as do all children. He stopped believing in him. Now Tobias is an adult, and has buried himself in lies and deceit, insecurities and failures, terrified that he will discover how dissatisfied he is with himself. Suddenly, Xavier returns to check-up on his childhood friend, and Tobias blames all of his current failures on tricks played by the Monster. Xavier takes Tobias through a haunting game of failures and pretense, to show him that Tobias is failing himself; not allowing himself to win. But when Tobias finally realizes that he no longer needs the Monster to blame things on, Xavier suddenly realizes how badly he needs Tobias.
A surrealistic play about finding the truths within oneself.
World Premier performance at Denver's Dangerous Theatre, Denver, CO. Oct. - Nov. 2012.
Audience member comments:
"I laughed, I was startled, I was intrigued. Where DO we draw the line between reality and illusion? Where DO we look for love and how can we embrace outselves, our foibles, our needs ... each other?
"It is very dark and intense with an excellent script that will keep you wondering what is real."
"Very insightful "
"Exceptionally good play "
"Intriguing and most through provoking."
From the review on MileHighGayGuy blog: "It is difficult to watch "Comfort in the Arms of the Damned" and not be reminded of recent headlines. Of what happens when person surrenders to the taunting voices, and their distorted reality collides into the real world."
From the review on BroadwayWorld.com: "This was a twisted and seductive show that had some fascinating content. The opening monologue really drew you in and made you want more of Tobias's tortured purgatory. Xavier was absolutely menacing and simply vicious towards Tobias which engaged the audience and the female Greek chorus was just fun to watch. I must applaud Mr. Vick on some compelling content that kept me up at night "
