The new book "Compendium on Seamanship and Sea Accidents - A practical guide to improve Seamanship and to prevent Sea Accidents" explains detailed the principles of the rules of good seamanship.In the 19th century the British merchant marine e.g. lost ca. 1,300 vessels during one year. Reasons for these tragic losses were insufficient training, drunkenness of the seafarers and as well as old and rotten ships. The vessels have definitely improved but there are still too many preventable mistakes. Unfortunately the training with some exceptions has never been adequate to the necessities of their duties and responsibilities. Referring to these circumstances this book shows the connection between the disregard of good seamanship and the causes of many sea accidents.
