Conventions and Craft is six, grade-specific kits, K-5. Each kit will provide a year's worth of conventions instruction (i.e., sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and capitalization, word consciousness, and general editing), with one concept, or "understanding," covered each week in a series of "micro-workshop"-- ten minutes of instruction, most likely at the start of writing time. Understandings are derived from what CCSS, TEKS, and VSOL require for each grade -- and can be taught in any sequence teachers choose. Over the five days, students see the understanding "in action" in a mentor text (nonfiction book or magazine article) and in a piece of student writing, watch the teacher model how to apply the understanding in writing, and try out the understanding in their own writing. Lessons are meant to be quick--again, just ten minutes a day. No more. Because Conventions and Craft lessons are easy to implement and quick to do, we see the resource being a nice replacement for the old-fashioned, outdated (yet still widely used) "Daily Oral Language" and a nice complement to Traits Writing, Trait Crates, and other forthcoming writing products that focus more on craft than conventions.
