We are called by Christ to do his will and not our own. Often we will be tempted to do our own will, this comes about either thru the trials of life or severe temptations against the virtues God has implanted in us. In short, when we are driven to this poverty of spirit and we see that there is no way out but thru God alone we realize the weakness and frailty of our spirit without the help of God. It is often true that we may go long periods of time without severe temptations, but Jesus tells us to "stay awake," for we "do not know the day nor the hour." The truth is that we are weak creatures prone to sin and to turn our back on God, but God is just and when he promises "not one of them was lost (except the son of perdition), then we must rely upon the promise of the Word Incarnate to be with us at every step of our life. Jesus has placed his Spirit within us to lead us forward in truth and holiness. Temptations and trials are a way for us to deny ourselves and turn to the Lord and be saved. In the eyes of the world, a man is to stand his ground and fight to death, but in the eyes of the new creation we are to surrender to a higher power and turn to God for help. We do not need to become spiritual police in order to investigate the origins of our temptations and trials, but all we need to do is the work that God has given for us to do and let God take care of our spiritual enemies. He, the tempter, has already lost the eternal fight against Christ, so it is only right that we should give Christ, the glory. We can do that by acts of faith, hope and love.
