Recenzii
Harry Annison's thorough and perceptive history of the IPP significantly advances our understanding of the genesis and demise of this sentence, while also contributing to our broader understanding of the nature of penality in late 20th and early 21st Britain.
Harry Annison's Dangerous Politics is an in-depth study of the 'creation, contestation, amendment, and abolition' of the controversial indeterminate sentence of imprisonment for public protection ... Annison uses a framework of 'interpretive political analysis' to explore how and why the IPP sentence came into existence, and why potentially restraining influences appeared to have little effect on the progress of a policy that was to prove so damaging. By weaving a rich and authoritative narrative, he skilfully incorporates materials from an impressive 63 qualitative interviews with key actors and observers, including politicians, civil servants, special advisers, judges and criminal justice practitioners.
A tremendous read for anyone working in the criminal justice system ... Annison deftly illustrates how the IPP came into being at a time of punitive, pre-emptive, risk-oriented penality in England and Wales ... His account of 'illusory democratization' and desire on the part of Ministers to 'manage public opinion' is one of the most interesting aspects of the IPP story ... A cautionary tale indeed.
an authoritative account of the history of the IPP sentence.
A thorough look at policy disaster.
