Decentering the Regime – Ethnicity, Radicalism, and Democracy in Juchitán, Mexico
Autor Jeffrey W. Rubinen Limba Engleză Paperback – 17 noi 1997
Employing an interdisciplinary approach, Rubin shows that the Juchitecos' ability to organise and sustain a radical political movement grew out of a century-long history of negotiation of political rule. He argues that factors outside the realm of formal politics - such as ethnicity, language, gender, and religion - play an important part in the dynamics of regional political struggles and relationships of power. While offering a detailed view of the Zapotec community and its interactions, Rubin reconceptualises democracy by considering the question of how meaningful autonomy, self-government, cultural expression, and material well-being can be forged out of violence and repression.
Decentering the Regime will have a major impact on studies of the political history of Mexico, as well as broader discussions of the relations between culture and politics in the fields of political science, anthropology, and postcolonial studies.

Recenzii
"Decentering the Regime reveals a creative, unorthodox political scientist at work. Rubin integrates trenchant cultural and ethnohistorical analysis into his examination of local, regional, and national politics. In the process, his work takes its place on the cutting edge of research not only on Mexican politics and Latin American social movements, but also on broader, post-structural discussions of hegemony and the contested relationship between state formation and popular culture." - [Reader's Report, Permission Pending]
