Recent years have seen a great increase in oil and gas industry interest in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Contributing factors have included significant hydrocarbon discoveries, passage of the Deepwater Royalty Relief Act, the availability of infrastructure, and the emergence of innovative technologies to find, develop, and produce oil and gas in the deepwater environment.
