Demeter: Gods and Heroes of the Ancient World

Autor Nuno Rodrigues
en Limba Engleză Hardback – apr 2026
This volume provides a comprehensive, accessible and up to date analysis of the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. The book covers all aspects of their myth, worship and cult, from their origins and functions, to the key narratives about their deeds and relationships, and also their diverse worship and ritual across the Greek world, at Eleusis and beyond. The final part examines their reception and influence, in ancient Rome, but also in western art and literature, film, and the appropriation of their myths in psychoanalytic theory. Drawing on literary and archaeological sources, this volume fills a significant gap in the study of these complex and mysterious goddesses.

Recenzii

  • Alberto Bernabé. Universidad Complutense, Madrid , Spain
"It is an interesting proposal, an introductory book about Demeter and Persephone dealing with almost all the main problems involved in the study of both deities. (I say "almost" because the reservations signaled in § 3 [re. Orphic myths])."
The author has addressed his concerns about the Orphic myths and these will be included.
  • Sarah Hitch, Corpus Christi College Oxford
"Rodrigues (R.) rightly points out the need for a comprehensive, accessible and up to date study of these goddesses and this Routledge series is a very good format for this. It is nice to see a new voice outside of Anglo-American scholarship represented in a series widely used in the UK and USA and the proposed bibliographic representation of important studies in languages other than English will be very helpful"
Dr. Theodora Suk Fong Jim, Lancaster University, UK
"Good introductory books on Demeter and Persephone are currently lacking, and a new book on the subject would be a welcome addition to Routledge’s Gods and Heroes of the Ancient World Series. However, I have some reservations about the scope of the study, the source materials used, the content and structure of the proposed book."
See author’s response in file.
  • Jennifer Larson, Professor of Classics, Kent State University, USA
"Prof. Simões Rodrigues (hereafter R.) is correct that no comparable book currently exists. Therefore I expect the Demeter and Persephone volume in the Ancient Gods and Heroes series to be much consulted. However, certain omissions in this proposal and a lack of specificity in several areas give me concern. In particular, there are methodological and structural issues. A book like this ought also to address questions of gender and Greek religion so that it can be adopted by instructors of courses on Women in Antiquity and Gender in Antiquity."
See author’s response in file.
The series editor has worked a lot with the author on the revised proposal over a number of months, and she is now happy to proceed. He has addressed the concerns raised by the reviewers (see response).
