Dentist on the Ward is written for students and recently qualified dental surgeons working in hospital departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the first time. As well as being an introduction for those with no prior experience it provides much of the basic knowledge of medical subjects that any dentist will need for non-specialist examinations in an uncomplicated and concise format.

The text provides essential information necessary for the new recruit, who is not medically qualified, on routine procedures which they may have to carry out on their own, background clinical information which relates to these procedures and an introduction to the clinical work of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons as practiced in the United Kingdom.

The book is edited, expanded and updated with a new edition each year to take account of changed in practice, regulation and hospital procedures. For the 6th (2016) edition chapters on Potentially Malignant Oral Conditions, Salivary Gland Swellings, Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy have been added. Chapters on Consent, Being on Call, Anticoagulation, Venepuncture, Minor Oral Surgery, Wound Closure, Histopathology and Keeping Out Of Trouble have been updated.

Dentist on the Ward is written by two Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons with decades of experience in supervising and teaching young dentists working in their departments. It simplifies the essential medical knowledge needed for hospital work and differentiates it from detail found in standard medical or surgical textbooks that they do not necessarily need to know.
