Departures

Autor David Wevill
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 14 apr 2013
This 150-page collection covers the entire poetic career of David Wevill, who has faded from view as a poet in the UK since his departure for the United States in the early 1970s. His first four collections won many prizes and gained him a reputation as one of the finest poets of his generation, as well as a place in all the major anthologies of the period and in the seminal Penguin Modern Poets series. His subsequent collections, with the exception of a 2010 retrospective volume in the USA, were all published in the author's native Canada and have been difficult to obtain either in the UK. David Wevill lives in Austin, Texas. This second edition of Departures is in a larger format, and with larger type than the first edition.

Notă biografică

David Wevill was born a Canadian in Japan in 1935, and was educated in both Canada and England. He has lived in Burma and in Spain but has made his home in Austin, Texas for the past fifty years. While resident in England in the 1950s and '60s, he established a substantial reputation as a poet, publishing four volumes between 1964 and 1974. He won prizes, was represented in major anthologies such as The New Poetry and A Group Anthology, and was included in the renowned Penguin Modern Poets series before his first full collection appeared. His first four collections were gathered in the Collected Earlier Poems, companion to this volume. In the late '60s he moved across the Atlantic to take up a position in Austin, Texas, and then joined the University of Texas there in 1970, where he remained until retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2008. He still lives in Austin today.

Recenzii

'Departures' is a timely restoring to our attention of a very fine poet and a clear indication of what we have been missing. It is a must-read; almost a matter of conscience. (Matt Simpson in 'Stride Magazine')
