Diasporic Identity

Autor Aindrilla Guin
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 21 feb 2013
Diasporic experience is too diverse and multifaceted to be beaten down to a single definition. This book captures the different nuances of the South Asian Diasporic group settled in Britain. It studies the human conditions, the problems and disturbances of their lives, the rifts in their personalities caused by the dislocations and problems they face for lack of acculturation. Moreover the book introspects into the different interpretations of the term 'diaspora' and the changes in meanings that this term has accommodated. Fictional works of two diasporic authors, each from their countries of origin India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have been analyzed. The writers are Meera Syal and Sunetra Gupta from India; Hanif Kureishi and Nadeem Aslam from Pakistan; Ambalavaner Sivanandan and Romesh Gunesekera from Sri Lanka; and Monica Ali and Tahmima Anam from Bangladesh. However the writers do not form a homogenous group. Apart from their different nationalities, they come from diverse ethnic groups and from different linguistic backgrounds. This book addresses the many ambiguities that surround diaspora with a view to developing the intricacies involved in the diasporic processes.
