After the political changes of 1989/90, the traditional Church of the Transylvanian Saxons faced one of its greatest challenges: the majority of its members decided to emigrate to Germany, leaving the remaining congregations that continued to shrink. During the period of communist rule, the church not only offered a religious, but also a cultural and linguistic homeland, but unlike before during the creeping emigration, it now had to find motivating answers to questions about its legitimacy and future viability. Christoph Klein took up his office as bishop shortly after reunification and, for around two decades, constantly steered the church out of helplessness in the direction of confidence and consolidation and moderated the reorientation. During this time he visited all still existing congregations and institutions according to the old custom, so that his reports - supplemented by other documents - represent a unique source of what is possibly the greatest change in this church since the Reformation.
