He described defence mechanisms from within or talked about sado-masochistic arrangement of relationships, that we all know well. His portraying of types - drawn with only few brush strikes - are a match for the introvert and extrovert types of C.G. Jung. With his extraordinary understanding of the origin of delinquence he made a considerable contribution to modern criminology. In this book there is a follow up of those avant-garde achievements for example the characters Alexej, the gambler, Nastasya out of The Idiot and Rodion Raskolnikov out of Crime And Punishment.
