English summary: What did things mean to ancient people? Why were they discussed and treated in ancient literature with the rhetoric and the charismatic flash of lauded protagonists or why were they envisioned pictorially and vividly in the arts? Rhetoric supplies here the key concept of enargeia from the Greek, which has other meanings such as vividness, liveliness, and presence. This volume is the first study about the understanding of things in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations: its objective is to make the recently established field of Thing Studies, developed in the fields of cultural studies and art history, useful for classical archeology and ancient studies. The case studies collected here are not concerned with a reconstruction of political, social or religious attributions of meanings on an object but rather to reclaim the things of antiquity as cultural signs of presence. This volume offers various perspectives: early Greek notions of awareness are discussed as well as the Homeric idea of an active world, intentionally related to humans, strategies of stimulation of works of art through writing and image as well as the concepts of the poetic and artistic visualization of the world. Additional studies from philosophy, cultural anthropology, and art history throw light on the post-antique, modern and postmodern Human-Thing-Relationships and set the studies of antiquity within the current horizon of research. Der vorliegende Band ist die erste Untersuchung zum griechisch-romischen Dingverstandnis: Sein Anliegen ist, die in der jungeren Kultur- und Kunstwissenschaft fest etablierten Thing Studies fur die Klassische Archaologie und die Altertumswissenschaft insgesamt fruchtbar zu machen.
