"I liked Salty Splashes books a lot. Let me list what I liked about them: (1) They are adventure stories, but not too scary for younger kids; (2) They rhyme in a natural, not forced, way; (3) They are actually a series...and you all know that I love series; (4) The characters are all animals and, oftentimes, unlikely friends (e.g., a dog and a cat); (5) They bring in new friends in each book; (6) They are kids who will be kids, so real kids can relate to them; (7) The illustrations are hand-drawn, very colorful, and super neat. I think the best part of these books is that they actually read like fiction and would appeal to a wide range of ages...I have to admit that I had never heard of Children's Illustrated Fiction before these three landed on my doorstep. But now that I have, I'm a big fan. This is a very cool concept and done really well. I will definitely be reading these books to my grandkids. Count me among JZ's fans!" ~ Lloyd Russell, The BookSage, Los Gatos, CA 4/16/13
[From a handwritten feedback form]: "Dreamy Drums was my favorite because I like thunder and lightning...It was fun because there is a lot of action. I would love it if you made it into a movie. P.S. I love your books please make more. Thank you JZ Bingham. Sincerely, Jonas." ~ 2nd grader, Imperial Elementary, Anaheim, CA 6/3/13
"I just finished reading a beautifully illustrated and well-written book...Dreamy Drums, Trouble In Paradise. I thoroughly enjoyed the rhythmic verse and clever illustrations...Preschool and school-aged children will love this colorful and fun story. The characters are well-defined and capture the heart of the reader from the first page. I felt like a child as I read each page and became completely engaged and concerned about the outcome of the story...I give this book 5 STARS -- EXCELLENT book! Well done, JZ!" ~ Janice Spina, Jemsbooks, Londonderry, NH, 3/21/13
"Dreamy Drums: a fun and amusing start to the Salty Splashes Collection. Young readers are introduced to a dog and cat family who are getting a new little pup, Sammy. Told in delightful rhymes with bright, colorful illustrations, the story tells the tale of Sammy and his tricks and antics at his new home...There is no doubt an adventure is going to follow these four trouble-makers. The illustrations are jolly and colorful, and really enhance the rhyming text. Personalities are evident in the characters, and the plot thickens as the characters realize they might be in some trouble." ~ Jennifer Szoch, Book Reviewer/Presenter 5/18/13
"I just wanted to touch base and let you now that I presented the entire Salty Splashes Collection at a couple recent workshops and the librarians and teachers loved it! There were saying it was a perfect trilogy for children! Just wanted to pass on some good feedback! Thanks so much." ~ Jennifer Szoch, Book Reviewer/Presenter 7/22/13
"Dreamy Drums is super cute! With the sing-song rhythym, excellent story line and amazing pictures, this book is an all-around winner. My son and I loved it and I know my classes will love it too! I was able to expand the story by going into more details about what the puppy did wrong and what he COULD have or SHOULD have done, and I really liked that! I have to give another shout-out to the illustrator here: I LOVE these pictures! AMAZING!!! Review from my 5-yr. old son: 'I REALLY liked this book! I like puppies AND kitties. My favorite part was the puppy riding with the stork!'" ~ Jennifer Lombardi, Libby's Fun Books 5/3/13
"JZ Bingham's whimsical adventure story, Dreamy Drums, Trouble in Paradise, sets the stage for a new genre of children's literature by bridging the gap between juvenile picture books and young reader novels. With a character for everyone to relate to, Paradise appeals to the spirit of adventure in us all. Sammy and his unconventionally charming family, set against the lush backdrop of California's Central Coast, offers the reader a look into the rich dynamics of conflict and unconditional love we associate with family life." ~ Stella P., Goodreads Reviewer, English Major, Anaheim, CA 5/2/13

What Inspired Salty Splashes:
My Shih-Tzu puppy brought me joy during a lonely time and inspired me to begin writing in earnest after a long dry spell (Samira is the Sammy character in Salty Splahes; I turned her into a male because she's such a tomboy). The writing process evolved quickly thereafter, drawing further inspiration from my surroundings in Santa Barbara: namely the Channel Islands (where my cartoons have their initial adventures) and the bobcat that lives in the canyon behind my home (he became Beardsley, an integral character).
The Importance of Children's Literacy:
I began reading before Kindergarten and grew to take it for granted. After becoming an adult literacy tutor at my local library, I learned of the prevalence of illiteracy among adults and children. It was shocking. One of the statistics I cite on my website reveals 4th grade is a turning point for children's literacy. Salty Splashes books were written with this age group in mind, and those even younger. The "hybrid" component of these books combine picture book appeal with chapter book fiction, providing an important new vehicle for early to mid-elementary school children who are on the cusp of independent reading. There's a void in the market place for this type of book. Children's Illustrated Fiction, as many parents, teachers and librarians have validated since the release of Salty Splashes, is exactly what they've been looking for. Actual testimonials over the last two months specifically point out how 2nd and 3rd graders view picture books as too young and boring, but are intimidated by text-only chapter books. Cartoons and adventure stories in Salty Splashes are getting these kids to read. This will help keep a lid on illiteracy.
The Power of Cartoons:
Not all cartoons speak to children, even though all children seem to be drawn to colorful illustrations. Salty Splashes cartoons were written to fill what I believe is a void in wholesome entertainment for kids, akin to the Looney Tunes and Peanuts cartoons I grew up with. The power of cartoons is how relatable they can be to a child and how this familiarity may be used to gently introduce important life lessons that can be more easily understood from the youthful perspective of a child. Parent and teacher feedback has been strongly positive regarding the moral messages and deep symbolism in these books. In fact, parents are using the character's predicaments as talking points to let kids vocalize their own views on how trouble could be avoided and recognize the importance of loyalty, respect and teamwork. This makes reading time even more of a bonding experience, and it also spreads out the enjoyment of each book by allowing it to be broken down into bite-size pieces.
