Everybody knows the damage drugs cause and the heartbreak that follows when the drugs take over and the person becomes a hopeless addict. A very close friend of mine lost his son to addiction because he could not find an effective rehab program to save his son in time. He had tried program after program and each one ended in relapse until the boy finally took his own life. The fearful end anyone in this situation dreads. He started off with home programs, then free programs and then government assisted programs. This became a very sad story as none of them achieved anything more than temporary relief. They all ended in relapse. He came to the conclusion that there was no program that offered true long term freedom from drugs. Even when the lad stopped using and promised faithfully he would never use again he always eventually slipped back into the habit. He at one time sent him to a private clinic that advertised good results and promised to get him off and they did for a while but then the cravings started and the boy went back to using again. Desperate, my friend decided there was nothing he could do to help his kid. I learned about this whole saga too late and that's when I decided to do a thorough research of the various programs available to see if there were any that achieved their promise of true rehab. Not just a rehab that would get the person off drugs for a while, which seemed easy enough to find, but one that would get them off for good, change their attitude and make them capable of living a normal decent life. There seemed to be two major problems. The first problem was to get the person truly clean. Many rehabs just give replacement drugs. This is of course an admission of failure and not rehabilitation at all. Rehabilitation by its very definition is to return to a former state. A former state is of course no drugs. So obviously if the person still needs drugs of any sort, they are not rehabilitated. So getting the person off all drugs is the first requirement. This I found can be done but requires a very exacting detox routine to get the drugs completely out of the person's body. Then I discovered getting their body clean was not enough. Yes, it made the person drug free but there was still the matter of what got them into drugs in the first place. Then I discovered an amazing thing. Did you know that back of all addiction there is a problem? A problem or situation that was troubling the person. A problem for which the person never had a good solution and it was that that made them open to taking drugs to bury the problem. Without this factor being addressed, getting them off drugs only takes them back to the prior problem. Unless this is found and resolved they can again return to the old solution of taking drugs. The rehab program must address and resolve this with the person. Then there is the problem of their past misdeeds. If they are ever going to be free of their past they need to clean this up too and repair the relationships they messed up while addicted. If they don't get this handled and come clean on that, their future life will still be rough. These are some of the things I discovered as I searched to see if there was a program that could get an addict drug free and get them to stay drug free and also rehabilitate them as a person. In other words, get them to become a decent, trustworthy human being again.
