Richard and Veronica Stevens accept an early out offer from their employer so they can retire to Florida and pursue other interests. Shortly after they move to the Daytona Beach area Veronica gets involved with the Domestic Abuse Council as a volunteer court advocate. Court advocates work out of an office at the local women's shelter. One day a young Mexican woman named Teracita Goncalves shows up at the shelter. She's been badly beaten and fears for her life. Teracita had been brought to the shelter by a local priest whom she'd gone to for help. When she and Veronica meet there is an immediate emotional connection made between them.
