He grew up in Chicago and earned a BS in physics from the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus. He moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he completed an MS thesis in nuclear physics at McMaster University. He then obtained a PhD in nuclear physics from Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.
