Effect Of Yoga Practices On Emotional Intelligence & Academic Stress Of Adolescent Students

The present study aimed to find out the effect of yoga practices on improving Emotional Intelligence and reducing Academic Stress of adolescent students. A sample of 160 boys and girls was administered 100 items in the areas of the Emotional Intelligence inventory, developed by Mangal and Mangal (2004). It primarily measures the four areas of Emotional Intelligence namely: (i) Intrapersonal Awareness, (ii) Interpersonal Awareness, (iii) Intrapersonal Management, and (iv) Interpersonal Management. In addition, respondents were also administered 80 item scale of Academic Stress, developed by Abha Rani Bisht (2005). The scale primarily measures four independent components namely: (i) Academic Frustration, (ii) Academic Conflict, (iii) Academic Pressure, and (iv) Academic Anxiety. Based on the scores of the inventory and scale, the adolescents were classified into experimental and control groups and they were given yoga practices as designed by the investigator. The obtained data from the respondents were statistically analyzed by using mean, correlation coefficient, and independent sample t-test. The result of the study indicated that yoga practices significantly improved the areas of Emotional Intelligence and in turn reduces the stress level in different components of Academic stress. Overall, the study recommended that periodical intervention programs are suggested for adolescent boys and girls in order to promote both physical and psychological well-being.
