A systematic approach to product design and safety from an engineering perspective

This new design guide focuses on product safety and engineering ethics for engineering students and technical professionals across many fields and industries. The book is written from the perspective of an active product-safety manager at a large and fast-paced designer, manufacturer, and worldwide distributor of mass-produced, innovative, and potentially hazardous consumer products.

The book presents a holistic approach to product design and safety of those products.  This approach is named Design for Product Safety (DFPS).  DFPS strives to “design in” product safety characteristics early in the engineering process. Readers will receive a thorough discussion of the product-design process with a focus on the detailed Engineering Design, Development, and Testing Phase (EDDTP) presented.  The book covers what safety is and is not, engineering ethics, product-safety concepts, hazard and risk, design considerations and guidance, the role of warnings and manuals, product-safety engineering tools, and post-sale surveillance for product-safety defects and subsequent recalls.
