This study examines the meaning of entering drug treatment, barriers to treatment, and the factors reported as influencing decisions to enter or avoid treatment by a sample of 20 African-American injection drug users (IDUs). Research indicates that IDUs who do not enter treatment pose serious public health risks by potentially spreading HIV and Hepatitis C through sharing drug injection equipment.

Dr. DiReda has worked for over twenty years helping individuals, families, and organizations hospitals, clinics, jails to address issues relating to chemical dependence. He is currently Director of Counseling Services and teaches at Clark University, and operates a private clinical and consulting practice.
