Experimental investigation of the influence of nozzle-flow properties on the primary spray breakup

Autor Benjamin Balewski
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 mar 2010
In many applications the generation of sprays plays an important role, e.g. in an internal combustion engine the properties of the fuel spray are important for the quality of combustion and subsequently for the fuel consumption and the emissions. To design a spray with the desired characteristics the whole process of atomization has to be understood in detail, especially the connection between nozzle flow and primary breakup, the first part of atomization. Until now, the models describing this process are not satisfactory which is related to the very challenging problem of obtaining suitable experimental data from the nozzle flow as weil as from the primary breakup region. This difficulty arises because of the usually small dimensions of the nozzle and the limited optical accessto the primary breakup region. Since these data are missing, the modeling of breakup models is difficult and for numerical simulations no comparative data for validation are available. Therefore, the research objective of this work is to provide high resolution data sets of the flow and turbulence in the nozzle combined with quantitative information about the primary breakup region of the spray generated by this nozzle in the atomization regime. This is done for different nozzle geometries designed to obtain turbulence and a secondary flow field as weil as for different Reynolds numbers achieved by firstly a change of the medium and secondly by a variation of flow rate.
