Exhibitions played a core role throughout the Ulm School of Design (HfG)'s fifteen-year history: the school's curriculum covered pioneering exhibition design, and major industrial companies commissioned modern exhibition stands from the HfG-exhibitions were important too as a crucial vehicle of self-reflection, mediating the school's cultivation of its own image. They also helped air the HfG's game-changing ideas on the global stage. The research project "The Visibility of the Ulm School of Design: From Ulm to Montréal", funded by the VolkswagenStiftung between 2017 and 2021, focuses on this rich and diverse history in the first study of the special significance of exhibitions in the HfG's work, whose influence still points toward the future. Here, the project was able to draw on a large number of previously unknown or neglected documents. Taken as a whole, these documents shed new light on a particular facet of the Ulm school. The three books have a common aim: to provide a new foundation for future studies of the school and to invite further research.
