• Fighting is Like a Wife is a Greek tragedy told as a boxing story. The poems speak from three different perspectives: Bobby's, the narrator (or chorus in the Greek tradition), and-importantly-Valorie's. While Bobby gained tremendous fame, not much is known about Valorie, and in this collection Eloisa gives her a voice and a story of her own. The poems in Bobby's voice are are manipulations of direct quotes from the boxer gathered through extensive research, both written and video.
• The title of the book comes from a profile of the boxer titled "Fighting Is Like a Wife," by Ralph Wiley for Sports Illustrated, July 11, 1983.
