Floating in Space

en Limba Engleză Paperback
'An engaging read which I thoroughly enjoyed' is how one reviewer described 'Floating In Space.' Another said he 'loved every page.' A young man tires of his mundane office job in Manchester, quits everything to go and live in Spain, then returns home disillusioned. His next journey around the streets of Manchester in 1977 is not the one he imagined he would be taking Follow Stuart Hill in the pubs and bars of Manchester. His life and loves unfold before us as they travel to their devastating climax and along the way take a fascinating peek into urban Manchester in the late 1970's. No mobile phones, no laptops, and no Internet, and a pint of bitter cost 25p Floating In Space is a kitchen sink drama in the same mould as 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' and 'A kind of Loving' and in this novel, Steve Higgins delivers a compelling first person narrative. Floating In space is set in the late seventies. There were no mobile phones, no internet, and no computers, well, there were computers but they were the size of a small room and were programmed by small cards with cut out holes. The main character, Stuart Hill, is in his early twenties and is bored by his life as an office worker. To escape this every day hum drum life he decides to go and live in Spain with his friend Mike Larini and enjoy the sun, sand, and hopefully, the young ladies. This does not quite work out so Stuart returns home and is cajoled by his mother into taking a job as a bus conductor. Stuart is initiated into the arts of snooker and working men's clubs by his new friend Bob McCoy. Sometime later Mike returns from his sojourn in Spain and surprisingly decides to start work for the bus company like Stuart as a bus conductor. He seems to be attracted to a girl called Carol, who is the wife of a bus driver known as 'AM', short for 'Action Man'. Bob has already advised Stuart that this man is violent and dangerous and Stuart passes on the warning to Mike and so the stage is set for an exciting and tragic climax. The spirit of working class urban life in Manchester in 1977 is affectionately recreated in this well observed memoir. How many real life Manchester pubs and bars will you recognise?
