[T]his title is highly recommended, particularly for public libraries and academic libraries, especially those with programs that would study folktales and fairy tales at the undergraduate and graduate level.
The four volumes are of considerable note. They cover a vast field of both traditional and literary folktales and fairy tales, together with their modern offshoots and, apart from their use for research purposes, there is much that will interest the general reader who is prepared to sit down and take the time to leaf through and enjoy them. Also, the cross-references often lead to unexpected connections that one might not otherwise have explored. . . . The books are a feast. Volume 4, alone, is of the utmost importance in contributing to understanding the world of traditions that surround us and that form the fabric of our society.
The earlier edition was stellar, the only caveat being there needed to be more of it. And now in this second edition, one fortunately does have more. . . . This encyclopedic work is indispensable, and there is nothing remotely like it in English. . . . Libraries of all sizes and types will want to add it. Summing Up: Essential. All readership levels.
[A] well-organized, well-documented introduction to folklore. This set is recommended for most academic and large public libraries. Those owning the original version will want to consider this for replacement.
