Founded in 1853, Fort Riley was established to protect merchants and settlers on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails. William McKale is director of the Fort Riley Museum Division. His previous work includes articles on cavalry and military history, as well as Fort Riley, Citadel of the Frontier West, published in 2000 by the Kansas State Historical Society.
