Gastonia and Gaston County: North Carolina: Images of America

Autor Piper Peters Aheron
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 30 apr 2005
Located west of the Catawba River in the fertile North Carolina Piedmont, Gaston County brims with neighborly people and majestic vistas. With the advent of railroads in a Reconstructed South, the county united from High Shoals to Crowders Mountain and from Mount Holly to Bessemer City. Gastonia Station was born at the crossroads, and by 1910 the city's economy thrived and its population boomed. In 1926, Gaston residents again embraced progress as they witnessed the completion of the state's first four-lane highway through the area. While it eased the crowded trains and trolleys, the boulevard, now known as Franklin, would forever alter the rural landscape.

Notă biografică

With help from Belmont Abbey College, Gaston County Library, the University of North Carolina, and other archives, Gaston resident Piper Peters Aheron, author of four celebrated Carolina histories, has created a unique, visual roadmap winding through the treasured past. More than 200 rustic portraits of clay main streets, horse-drawn buggies, and water-powered mills allow readers, both young and old, to revisit the optimism and the hardships, the architecture and the landscape of a city and county intricately linked to one another. Whether a lifelong county resident or a newcomer to the city, each reader will find Gastonia and Gaston County to be a charming journey down memory lane and a delightful addition to any family library.
