Geomorphology and Hydrology of Karst Terrains

Autor William B. White
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 27 iul 1988
Karst terrains - irregular limestone regions characterized by sinkholes, underground streams and caverns - have long been of interest because of the dramatic landscapes and the challenge of cave exploration. But the geomorphology and hydrology of karst drainage systems are now of interest to water supply specialists, urban planners, and environmental engineers. This graduate-level text discusses the chemistry of karst waters, the processes of sedimentary in-filling,the origins of caves, and the evolution of karst systems through geologic time. Since karst develops predominently by chemical processes, this text is written from the point of view of the chemistry of limestone solution. The approach is more quantitive and process-oriented than that of existingtextbooks, and the author includes material on environmental problems in karst regions, including land use and land management, water supply, and pollution control.

Recenzii

`He provides notable accounts of carbonate dissolution, the mechanics of groundwater flow and the geochemistry of karst waters. His command of these fields on occasion results in authoritative pronouncements on the linkages between laboratory theory and field evidence. This is a rare talent and is well exemplified here in the discussion of the processes of karst conduit and aquifer development.' Nature
`White's book has a lot of interesting material. This is a book which should be read by general geomorphologists to bring them up to date in the special landscapes of karst.' Times Higher Education Supplement
'This is a good book; if you are interested in karst buy it.' Journal of Quaternary Science
`There is a wealth of information and detailed discussion contained within this volume, and despite its scope and the nature of its title, I found it ... extremely readable.'`The book is an impressive one that is worth consultation in many fields. It is good for background knowledge, and deserves to reach a wider audience than academics alone.' Descent Oct\Nov 89
'a helpful and modern reference book'A.C. Waltham, Geological Magazine 126 (2) 1989
